In Praise of Good ALE Ì Ì Ì Ì Ì Ì Ì A Social History of brewing In this entertaining talk, Catherine Side MA MSc FIFST AIB discusses the origins of brewing, the importance of ale through the Middle Ages and its social impact today. The talk is illustrated with samples, pictures, folklore and song, and may be run in conjunction with a beer tasting. Catherine obtained her Masters degree in Brewing from Heriot-Watt University in 1977 and was Scotland's first lady brewer, working with Scottish and Newcastle Breweries. After some time in marketing positions with companies supplying brewing and food ingredients, she set up her own consulting company in 1991 and advises industry, the government and academia.
